"Internet2" is the most common name used to describe the
University Consortium for Advanced Internet Development (UCAID) and/or
the "Abilene" network operated by that consortium.
Kan-ed has arranged for connected Kan-ed members have direct, high-speed
access to Internet2, and through Internet2 to any of the members or affiliate
members of Internet2.
There are over 150 institutions of higher education and research connected
to Internet2, along with around 30,000 "affiliate" members (usually
K-20 institutions).
The "affiliates" are brought into Internet2 as part of the Internet2's
Sponsored Educational Group Particpant (SEGP) project, and are usually
accessible at network speeds sufficient to support video conferencing
and/or video streaming no matter where they are located within the country.
